The Tropenmuseum is a bit outside of what is referred to as central Amsterdam, but it is still a very walkable trip all the way through to the other side of the Plantage district. The museum was opened by the Royal Tropical Institute in order to study the indigenous populations of the tropics, and to help provide them with a better standard of living. The exhibits include the construction of life-like replicas of typical villages in mostly Dutch colonies, such as Indonesia and Surinam, but also of other areas such as Bombay, India; Mexico City; and cities in the Middle East. Some of the villages which include cramped shacks and street stalls, are also accompanied by music or street sounds that you might typically hear in these areas.
