We met our friends, Christiane and Michel, at their villa on the Cap for an early dinner on their terrace. Michel called it a pique-nique, and we ate lots of small dishes including: melon de Cavaillon, escabeche (normally made with anchois and lemons, according to Christiane, but this was made with sardines), roasted red peppers with parsley and garlic and olive oil, and steak tartare with capers, onions, tobasco sauce, worstershire sauce – excellent ! We had a lovely red wine (sangiovese maybe) from Lucca, where they had recently spent some time. Dessert was a refreshing dish of freshly-cut fruit. Everything was extremely tasty and not too heavy – a perfect pre-concert meal for a warm summer evening.
We were to meet another couple in Roquefort-les-Pins in the hills above Antibes for an alfresco jazz performance by “Trio Persi-Ceccarelli-Bistoni”. The other couple, Monique and François, brought a friend, a gentleman named Jean-Marie, who was very interested in practicing his English and talking about San Francisco. By chance, we ran into some other very good friends of ours, Jutta and Heinz. Heinz is a jazz afficiando and an excellent pianist himself. The six of us had just spent the evening together two nights ago chez Monique and François, toward the end of which Heinz regaled us with his music on the piano – some original music and some classics. And now here we were together again in the small village of Roquefort-les-Pins again enjoying beautiful music under the stars.
When the concert was over, the seven of us decided to drive over to another small village nearby for drinks. We met in the main square in the middle of the village of Valbonne and drank wine and beer outside in the warm summer evening. Quelle ambiance……
